What is God Like? God is Jealous

As I stated in a previous blog, I am reading Christian Beliefs: 20 Basics every Christian Should know by Wayne and Elliot Grudem. Here of are some of main points of  Chapter 2 titled “What is God Like.”

God is Jealous

This is an attribute that may be misunderstood by others since we tend to look at jealousy from both a negative and human perspective. When we hear that God is jealous this does not mean that He is insecure or that He worries about humans paying more attention to other things in this world instead of Him. In the first of the Ten Commandments God declares.

  • 1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me (Exodus 20:1-5)

God continually seeks to protect His own honor, that worship be only given to Him, and not anyone or anything.  This is honor He rightly deserves.

  • For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act ; For how can My name be profaned ? And My glory I will not give to another. (Isaiah 48:11)

From a personal perspective a very small example would be like a parent that works 2 jobs to put their child through college, pay for their expenses, and make sure that they were not neglected and knew how much they were loved by their parent. Then on graduation day the child says to everyone ” I could not have done this without my friends, they are the reason I made it.” The credit and honor that the loving parent deserves is given to someone else.

The bigger picture is that God loved us so much that He sent His Son Jesus to die on a cross and pay our penalty for sin. God gives us life, blessing, provision, gifts and talents. What does man do? Instead of giving God the honor He deserves, man takes credit for it all. Man worships the created things of this world instead of the One who created it.
