What is God Like? – God is Righteous & Just

As I stated in a previous blog, I am reading Christian Beliefs: 20 Basics every Christian Should know by Wayne and Elliot Grudem. Here of are some of main points of  Chapter 2 titled “What is God Like.”

God is Righteous & Just

Previously I wrote about the attribute of God’s love. Here we see that He is not only love; but He is also righteous, acting in accord with divine or moral law. He is also Just or acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright or good. As the Judge of the world God will always do what is right.

  • The Rock ! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just ; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He. (Deuteronomy 32:4)
  • “Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly ?” (Genesis 18:25)

He speaks the truth and declares what is right.

  • I have not spoken in secret, In some dark land ; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in a waste place ‘; I, the LORD, speak righteousness, Declaring things that are upright. ( Isaiah 45:19)

We must seek to do what is in line with God’s moral character. Because God is just, He must treat people as they deserve, and punish that which is against Him, sin. The good news is that through Christ God forgives people for their sin and does not punish them.

  • whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed ; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:25-26)

We should always seek to do what is right and bring about justice on behalf of those are not experiencing it.

  • To do righteousness and justice Is desired by the LORD more than sacrifice. (Proverbs 21:3)
