The Hour is Coming

It has been just over 30 years that have passed by since the glorious announcement by angels of His arrival here on Earth, and now just after a few short years in ministry His death is coming. For God the Son the time is rapidly approaching to begin His journey to the cross. The preparations begin as the hour is coming.

3 And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. 4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them. 5 They were glad and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd. 7 Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” .” – Luke 22:3-8

The hour is coming.

Soon Jesus will recline at a table with the apostles He has chosen to follow Him and break bread. These are the men that Jesus has been most intimate with during His time here. They have heard the authority and the revelation of His teaching. They have seen miracles displayed in His power to command storms to cease, the blind to see, the lame to walk, and the dead to rise. Yet one will betray Him, and another apostle will deny Him in the hours to come.

When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer ; 16 for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves ; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.- Luke 22:14-21

The hour is coming.

Jesus knows the pain, suffering, rejection, and wrath He will endure over the day to come. Worst of all will be the separation from God the Father for the first time ever. Jesus has left the glorious heavenly realms, and the intimacy of His relationship with God the Father to come and live as a man. The Father that He has deeply depended on during His earthly stay here will turn away His face from Him. As Jesus prays in the garden He feels the weight of what is to come, and begins to sweat blood.

40 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.  44And being in agony He was praying very fervently ; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.- Luke 22:40-4 4

The hour is coming.

Jesus know the agony, the torture, and the suffering He will endure, and chooses the road to the cross. This is why He has come. He knows that it is the only way to save humanity, and reconcile the broken relationship between a sinful people and their Creator. He chooses to love when so many have hated Him, and even though so many will reject Him. He has done nothing wrong. In fact Jesus has lived  a life of total perfection while clothed in flesh. But He knows this is the plan. It has always been the plan since the beginning so that you and I can have relationship again with our Heavenly Father.

The hour is coming.
